Comics as a method for improvement of redaing skills in the teaching of german as foreign language
Neradová, Zuzana ; Kafka, Clemens (advisor) ; Botlík Nuc, Tomáš (referee)
An increase in reading competence proceeds in five stages, with the fifth stage being literary competence, in which readers can absorb and evaluate the entire emotional world of the story and all the implicit information it contains. Increasing reading competence has a positive impact on both overall language ability and intercultural competence. One possible method to increase reading literacy is through comics - pictorial or other characters arranged in spatial sequences to convey information and/or create an aesthetic effect on the viewer - which have several advantages such as short texts, context given by pictures or authentic language. Comics offer a direct method of delivery of the emotions contained in the text. To test the effectiveness of comic books in increasing literacy, an experiment was conducted with two adaptations of E.M. Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front" - in a linguistically simplified version and in a literature comic form. The study showed that at A2 level, simple language books are more suitable for increasing reading literacy, as the measured increase in reading literacy was 20% higher for the students who worked with the linguistically simplified version than for those who worked with the literature comic. Graphic novels in German language teaching
Klusáčková, Marie ; Bučková, Tamara (advisor) ; Švermová, Dagmar (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of using graphic novel in German language teaching (teaching German as a foreign language). The main premise of this thesis is that graphic novel, as a multimodal medium and a phenomenon of current literature, has a wide potential for the German (and other foreign languages) classroom. The goal of the thesis is to design a didactic material respecting the specific qualities of graphic novel and drawing upon its potential. The first chapter serves as an introduction, exploring graphic novel as a medium, as a phenomenon of current literature and as a pedagogical tool. The term is defined and put into context. In the second chapter, the method of a review study is employed to explore how graphic novel is used in the foreign language classroom. The systematic review has shown that it is possible to use graphic novel as a tool for achieving the objectives of foreign language teaching and learning - the language aims (through vocabulary acquistition, reading skills development and creative writing) as well as the cognitive and formative aims (through the development of literacies, cultural and historical awareness, intercultural competence and citizienship). Moreover, graphic novel proved to be positive influence on motivation. The third chapter uses the...
The 20th century as seen by the cartoon reporter Tintin: reflections of the contemporary context of his adventures
Kulda, Tomáš ; Rak, Jiří (advisor) ; Pelánová, Anita (referee)
This work is showing that the Adventures of Tintin are not only an entertaining series, but that it also contains an important amount of political and social issues, which, given to its popularity, could have influenced the development of its young readers' political thoughts. This thesis is supported by showing the presence of a wide range of connections between the content of different episodes and their historical context. The point is also made on the changes brought by new editions, as they are most often connected precisely to these political topics. Finally, it shows that it is still a lively issue, despite the fact that the last episode was published more than thirty five years ago.
